George MacKay in Sam Mendes' '1917' Universal and DreamWorksWith $249 million worldwide as of yesterday, and coming off a Best Picture win at the BAFTAs, 1917 is A) going to pass $250 million globally this morning and B) pretty much a lock to win Best Picture at next weekend’s Academy Awards. Should 1917 win the Best Picture prize, and it has nearly swept the pre-Oscars awards season (Golden Globes, BAFTA, Hollywood Critics Association, etc.) I won’t be that sad if my second-favorite movie of the year doesn’t win Best Picture. If Best Picture is partially about aspirational artistic and commercial triumphs, then 1917 and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood are at least as aspirational in a franchise/tentpole world as Parasite. Either would be the first $100 million-plus Best Picture grosser since Argo in 2012 ($136 million/$155 million adjusted).
