As confirmed by Variety, Russia has opted out of sending an official Oscar candidate for the upcoming international feature film race. Russia has vowed to sever ties with the United States after accusing it of being directly involved in the conflict in Ukraine. Variety further reports that for years, Russia had consistently sent movies to the Oscars. Meanwhile, in a surprising move, the Film Federation of India, instead of picking the audience favourites RRR or The Kashmir Files, selected the 2021 Gujarati film Chhello Show aka Last Film Show as India's official entry for the Best Feature Film category at the Oscars 2023.
