The use of capital punishment dates back several decades in Kenya. However, the pre-colonial age did not see a broad adoption of the practice that was introduced to Kenya in 1893. The Turkana only carried out the death penalty for particularly heinous crimes like witchcraft and incest. When it gained its independence from Britain in the 19th century, the country took with it the death sentence. Since 1963, Kenyan courts have sentenced thousands of people to death, but have rarely carried out all of the executions.
