Protesters of COVID-19 restrictions, and supporters of Canadian truck drivers protesting the COVID-19 vaccine mandate cheer on a convoy of trucks on their way to Ottawa, on the Trans-Canada Highway west of Winnipeg, on Tuesday. In November, the government announced that beginning on Jan. 15 most essential workers crossing the border into Canada, including transport truck drivers, must be fully vaccinated, or otherwise must quarantine for 14 days. Organizers of the trucker protest, Freedom Convoy 2022, say they are heading to Ottawa to take back “our country.”“We want our freedom back,” trucker and Freedom Convoy organizer Brigitte Belton told iPolitics on Tuesday. “We have given truck drivers a long leeway because we understand the delicacy of their job,” Alghabra said. To pay for protestors’ trip to Ottawa, supporters of the convoy have donated more than $4 million online.
