Opuha Water Ltd chief executive Tony McCormick confirmed the contract, valued between $500,000 and $1m, would go out to tender before the end of the year. The lip would form a wave barrier in an effort to offer "maximum flood protection", he said. McCormick said Opuha Water had lodged a building consent application with Environment Canterbury to make the improvements. The Opuha Dam, situated about 17 kilometres north-east of Fairlie, was an infrastructure project undertaken by the community of South Canterbury.
