BOSTON—An Oppenheimer & Co. financial adviser helped facilitate a $1.2 million payment by a Chinese family to the college counselor at the center of the college admissions cheating scandal, according to a person familiar with the matter. Federal court filings said an unnamed Los Angeles-based adviser allegedly coordinated for the family to pay William “Rick” Singer, who has admitted to being the mastermind of the college-admissions scheme, to secure a spot for a young woman at Yale University.
