Operation Midland:Detectives convinced themselves case was about unsolved child murders

Lady Brittan was still grieving for her husband, Leon, as police called ALAN DAVIDSON/REX/SHUTTERSTOCKWhen they arrived at Leon Brittan’s country home in North Yorkshire, the police search team formed up and walked, in a line abreast, across the lawns. The Brittans’ housekeeper got the impression the police were looking at the ground, assessing if earth had been disturbed. Inside the house, officers seized shoes belonging to Lord Brittan, who had died a few weeks earlier. Swabs were taken from areas of carpet and floor where police thought they detected small bloodstains. It was March 4, 2015, and this was the major action that officers on Operation Midland — the investigation into a non-existent establishment paedophile ring — had been planning for months.
