Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, one of the world's most celebrated sopranos, wants to concentrate on helping young singers Denis Sinyakov/Getty ImagesThe world-famous opera singer Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, who sang at the wedding of the Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer, has called time on her long career. The 73-year-old New Zealander told the BBC that, after her last public performance in Australia last year, she did not want to hear her voice again. She said: “It is in the past. When I’m teaching young singers and hearing beautiful young fresh voices I don’t want to put my voice next to theirs.”The soprano’s final performance came at a concert in Ballarat, near Melbourne, last October. But she will perhaps be remembered best for her rendition of Handel’s Let the Bright Seraphim at the royal wedding 1981, watched by an estimated 600 million people.
