A Waikato dairy processing company has been handed its fifth fine for discharging “nauseating” odour into the air, costing the company more than $460,000 in reparations. Open Country Dairy has had a long history of charges and fines for bad smells dating back to 2007. In one of the court proceedings, Judge Smith said Open Country Dairy made a profit of around $670,000 per day. The trustees of the Waharoa trust will be composed of community members and a representative from Waikato Regional Council.
