Ontario set to expand access to mixed mRNA doses

Currently, Ontarians can book a second dose of either mRNA vaccine, regardless of their first dose, at clinics that have supply of both, through the provincial site. Ontarians expressed frustration at the difficulty of booking second doses, with many of them taking appointments far from home, amid a surge of demand. The group recommended those who received a first dose of an mRNA vaccine seek the same one for their second dose. If the same shot is not readily available, another mRNA vaccine can be booked for a second dose, the group wrote. While there’s no conclusive data on mixing mRNA vaccines, early research from Spain and the United Kingdom concluded mixing AstraZeneca and Pfizer vaccines is safe and effective at preventing COVID-19.
