Ontario budget left out Grassy Narrows, says Chief Simon Fobister

Grassy Narrows Chief Simon Fobister says the budget — which did not include money for mercury cleanup — leaves the future of his people in doubt. In a report released Feb 28, scientists say the site of the old paper mill in Dryden is likely the source of mercury poisoning upstream from Grassy Narrows First Nation. His team is going to start studying and sampling sediment in the waters near Grassy Narrows next week. The site of the plant is about 100 kilometres upstream from Grassy Narrows and nearby Whitedog. 'My children are sick, my community is sick' - Grassy Narrows residents describe the toll of decades of mercury poisoning.
