Ontario Parks regulations force new tubing business to close, owner says

The owner of a month-old business operating in an Ontario provincial park says he was forced out of business due to “ludicrous” demands from the province. Derek Robertson first approached Kawartha Highlands Superintendent Paul Smith in December 2016 with the idea to open a tubing company on the Mississauga River. He described the 600 metre-long stretch of water northeast of Toronto as a “hidden gem.”“Locals knew about this spot but the tourists had no clue,” Robertson said. He thought, “I’ll tell them about the secret and see if they’ll rent tubes from me and they can float … and not worry about buying all the life jackets and supplies.”He opened his new business on June 3 and it was an overnight success.
