The new non-alcoholic beverage container recycling fee was originally set to roll out on April 1, but the launch was pushed to June 1 after the province warned beverage manufacturers they could not download recycling costs onto consumers. Sources say the launch of the Recycle Everywhere program will be further delayed because retailers are pushing back on proposed “container recycling fees” of between one and three cents. The fees were set forth by the Canadian Beverage Recycling Association in response to a new province-wide recycling program that shifts responsibility onto manufacturers rather than municipalities. Discussions are ongoing between retailers, the beverage industry and producer responsibility organizations like the Canadian Beverage Recycling Association, according to an industry source, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly. Such a program would charge consumers a recycling fee to purchase non-alcoholic beverages, which would be returned when containers are brought back.
