Incidents of cheating more than doubled in Hong Kong in the first half, police data reveal and they were largely related to surgical masks sold online. The increase was mainly due to online mask sales scams during the pandemic since late January, when 2,292 cases were recorded. Mask scams made up more than half of the increase, with the loss estimated at HK$70.22 million. Still, the police said, the number of cases has dropped from its peak of 873 cases in February to 109 in June. To date, a total of 96 fraudsters were arrested and 341 cases were detected, the police said.
