Online Threats Cancel High School Games in Two States in One Weekend

The latest incidents: schools in two states cancelled or postponed football games scheduled for Friday, Sept. 15, because of threats sent by text or through social media. Chambersburg (Pa.) High took a forfeit because of a threat posted to social media to "shoot up" the football game. But given the frequency of school shootings in the United States (including one just that week in Washington), school officials figured they couldn't be too careful. With schools shut down Sept. 14 and 15, that's forced cancellation of four football games, including one homecoming celebration, as well as multiple volleyball, golf and cross country events, and a middle school football jamboree. In Montana, the state association there is counting the games as postponements, but they still have to be made up before playoffs begin -- which could mean affected schools might have to play two football games in a week.
