One of the Gothenburg Greats who helped Aberdeen beat Real Madrid receives hometown honour

A Greenock football hero who famously helped Aberdeen beat Real Madrid to lift a major European trophy has received a special award from Inverclyde Council. John, who grew up in Gibshill in Greenock and still lives locally, was part of the iconic Pittodrie team that beat the mighty Real Madrid in the 1983 Cup Winners' Cup final in Gothenburg. He was among the Gothenburg Greats, including Willie Miller, Alex McLeish, Gordon Strachan and Eric Black, who received the Freedom of Aberdeen last year. Inverclyde is a special place and I'm just happy to fly the flag for the area.
