The Gowdas — the farming class — ate lamb, chicken and fish and a few sub-castes among them consumed domestic pork . The Dalits or Harijans (so called by the Mahatma in those days) and the few Muslims who lived in Gorur from time immemorial consumed beef — meat of cows, oxen and buffaloes. The Harijans lived from hand to mouth. I had a chance to visit the abattoirs, beef shops and meat works in malls. Not out of any religious convictions but maybe more out of some strange unaccountable sensibilities.Would I recommend beef, or a beef ban, to anybody? I have been long pledged to serve the cow but how can my religion also be the religion of the rest of the Indians?
