One in 10 Canadians say they’ve contemplated suicide since the pandemic began

The figure is reported in the latest survey conducted by the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA), which asked around 3,000 Canadians questions about their mental health between Sept. 14 and 21. Those who are Indigenous, LGBTQ and with pre-existing mental health conditions reported higher rates of decline than others. The report revealed the percentage of Canadians who have contemplated suicide is up from six per cent when CMHA conducted its first survey in May. The compounded stress of working from home and navigating children’s education has harmed parents’ mental health, Jenkins said. But despite the deterioration of Canadians’ mental health, the survey revealed many are not accessing mental health supports, largely because they believe they don’t need them.
