As night fell, armed FSB officers were carrying out sweeps of neighbouring courtyards in a search for the gunman’s possible accomplices. “I was sitting in a cafe opposite the FSB building when we heard shots,” Sergei Komlin said. The FSB building, which takes up an entire city block, was used by the KGB and its Soviet predecessors for interrogations and detaining opponents.
