A woman in her 60s was killed and five others injured after a knife attack in a historic central London square Wednesday night. The square is popular among tourists and students at the nearby University of London and University College of London. Police responded to reports of a man attacking people in Russell Square near the British Museum just after 10:30 p.m. London time, according to London police. Just hours before the attack, London’s mayor and police announced an increase in the number of armed officers to protect citizens “against the threat of terrorism,” according to the police. Police said early reports suggested mental health was “a significant factor” in the attack, though they continued to consider terrorism a possibility, Scotland Yard said.
