One Sherwood Forest bird's epic journey to Africa is helping to save his entire species


From Sherwood Forest to Senegal - a plucky Nottinghamshire cuckoo's epic 3,500 trip has been tracked to help protect the future of his species. And the Sherwood bird has proved one of the hardiest, flying to the west African coast when others have only taken flight as far as the likes of Belgium, Italy and Poland - including fellow Sherwood Forest cuckoo Nicholas, who was last seen loitering in the Italian Alps. (Image: British Trust for Ornithology)While they spend their winters away from the UK, cuckoos are one of the better known British bird species. Each April, after returning to our shores their distinctive calls can be heard heralding the return of spring.
