On the wings of hope: Luring the elusive monarch butterfly to Edmonton


The Edmonton Native Plant Society is trying to protect the low milkweed plant growing at the edge of Mill Creek ravine in the Hazeldean neighbourhood. "The milkweed feeds many butterflies but the most well-known is the monarch," said Gurba-Flanagan, a member of the Edmonton Native Plant Society. A monarch butterfly caterpillar on a low milkweed plant near Sherwood Park in 2012. In February, Hohenstein and her husband travelled to Piedra Herrada Sanctuary about 100 kilometres north of Mexico City. In recent years, the Edmonton Native Plant Society has worked with the city through its Partners in Parks program.
