“When I see the movie, it’s like a mellow version of what it was like making the movie,” says Smith. “You don’t know how far you’ve gone from your centre until you’re way out here.” He stretches out his arm. “You’re making incremental movements further and further out from home.”But the resulting film was, as they say, worth the trip. The brisk story – it runs a mere 78 minutes – follows former Australian soldier Mike Wheeler as he arrives in Kabul and tries to hire a car to take him south to Kandahar. Mike and his driver don’t speak the same language, and the film forgoes subtitles.
