On The Day Its Luxury Pickup Debuts, Germany Forces Daimler To Recall 3 Million Cars

An indignant Germany has called Daimler's bluff on its dirty diesels and Daimler, the parent company of Mercedes-Benz, has folded, almost immediately. Today, Daimler, the parent company of Mercedes-Benz, issued a statement saying it would spend €220 million to recall more than three million of its older turbo-diesel cars to clean up their NOx emissions. The easiest way to understand the level of desperation in Daimler’s scrambling is that they sacrificed the biggest news day, months in the rollout planning, for their critical X-Class pickup. The only grander news days on the books for the car is the public release and the first road tests. Today was the day Benz released a huge tranche of information about the X-Class, including lifting the embargo on journalists who had ridden shotgun in the pickup in South Africa.
