Omicron subvariant BA.2.12.1 discovered in community, more subvariants in wastewater


The first community case of the Omicron subvariant BA.2.12.1 – without a clear link to the border in New Zealand – has been reported. Meanwhile, the Omicron BA.4 and/or BA.5 subvariants have been detected in wastewater samples at Rosedale on Auckland’s North Shore and in Gisborne. Health experts in South Africa say a surge in cases is being driven by two Omicron sub-variants.
