A 2008 photo of the exercise area at the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay U.S. Oman’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement carried by the state-run Oman News Agency that it had accepted the prisoners at Obama’s request. The sultanate of Oman, on the eastern edge of the Arabian Peninsula, previously accepted 10 Guantanamo prisoners from Yemen in January 2016. Obama was unable to close Guantanamo because of Congressional opposition to holding any of the men in the United States. The majority of Guantanamo prisoners released have been sent to Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan.
