I had come to meet Steve and Jo McAtamney, owners of the spectacular 13,500 acre (5400Ha) freehold property, and our meeting place was Sutherlands Hut. Built in 1866 makes it our oldest standing hut out of our 1500-plus backcountry huts which exist in the country. The first night is spent at the refurbished Station Huts before heading to Pleasant Gully Hut, built in1897, then to Sutherlands Hut and finishing at Devils Creek Hut which dates back to the early 1900's. The highest part of the track over Fiery Pass hits 1284m, while Sutherlands Hut stands at an altitude of 640m. Sutherlands Hut stands as an historic reminder of early pastoral efforts in the high country.
