Old, majestic Norway maple near Toronto’s Don River has a dark side

A busy intersection is an unusual spot to see an enormous, majestic maple tree. The Norway maple stands alone on the southwest corner of Lawrence Ave. E. and Railside Rd., where the main road is filled with traffic at all hours, writes reader Tom Sommerville. Tom Sommerville has long-admired this Norway maple tree at a busy North York intersection. Unlike their distant cousin, the Norway, the sugar maple is not well-adapted to city life, doing poorly in compacted soils and polluted air. Maybe it’s time to plant a stand of native maple, beech and oak trees in the open area around this big Norway maple.
