Old St Paul’s has re-opened after being closed for 15 months for earthquake strengthening. The doors are open, the walls have been strengthened, the only thing missing from Old St Paul’s Cathedral is 154-years worth of dust settled on the highest rafters. Associate Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage, Grant Robertson, who officially reopened the site, said the wairua, or spirit, of Old St Paul’s was palpable walking through the doors. Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga Board Chair Marian Hobbs said Old St Paul’s was her favourite church in the country. The project was funded by the New Zealand Lottery Grants Board, Friends of Old St Paul’s, Stout Trust, the Wellington Community Trust, as well as from donations from around the world.
