Led by powerhouse forwards Kelepi Funaki and Unga Kefu, Old Boys scored seven tries and were always in control. Kurow opened the season with a bang, thumping Excelsior 53-0 at Kurow. There was a thriller in Oamaru, where Maheno held off Athletic Marist 38-37.
