A subsea oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico may be spilling much more oil than previously understood, according to a new government study, raising the stakes in a legal battle between the federal government and a small Louisiana oil company. Between 250 and 700 barrels of oil per day are leaking into the Gulf at the the site where Taylor Energy Co.’s oil platform collapsed in Hurricane Ivan in 2004, the new analysis concludes—and the same location where a persistent sheen of oil on the surface has appeared ever since.
