Peter Scantlebury was circled by a great white shark whilst kayak fishing in Taranaki at the weekend. Taranaki fisherman Peter Scantlebury was 400 metres out to sea in a kayak when he spotted the dorsal fin of a great white shark heading straight towards him “like a Russian submarine”. A great white shark can live for decades and grow to an average of six metres in length. “I thought, ‘Oh dear, there’s something down there’.”After a few seconds of silence, Scantlebury saw a large dorsal fin swimming towards him, and immediately recognised that it belonged to a great white. RNZ The Detail: Beaches, especially on the Coromandel have seen an increase in sightings of great white sharks, but an expert says the public needs more information.
