Sally Collier resigned as chief executive of Ofqual but Roger Taylor, its chairman, will keep his post. He had threatened to leave if he was not publicly backed by Gavin Williamson, the education secretary. Amanda Spielman, head of Ofsted, will help to run the beleaguered organisation and Ms Collier, a career civil servant, will be temporarily replaced by Dame Glenys Stacey, her predecessor.
