Horowhenua’s roads are some of the most dangerous in the wider region, but authorities are working to make them safer. People using Horowhenua roads are at significantly higher risk of death and serious injury than in Manawatū, Tararua and Palmerston North, according to a report tabled at Horizons Regional Council’s regional transport committee on Tuesday. Although there had been a decline in crashes resulting in deaths or serious injuries in the wider Manawatū area, those statistics would be affected by the coronavirus lockdown, the report said. Central district road policing manager Dave White said the area was known to have risky roads. Those improvements include roadside barriers, wider centrelines and a roundabout at the intersection of State Highway 57 and Queen St, Levin.
