Israel was determined to neutralize Bensouda’s investigations into Israeli war crimes committed in various attacks against Palestinians over the years. “Such actions may contravene Article 70 of the Rome Statute which governs the ICC,” writes the Guardian. The move was in retaliation to Bensouda’s pursuit of a separate investigation into war crimes in Afghanistan, allegedly committed by the Taliban and both Afghan and US military personnel.
