Your body mass index (BMI) may determine the risk of asthma in childhood. While overweight adolescent girls may be at a higher risk of hospital admission due to asthma, boys who are underweight are likely to be at risk of being admitted with the lungs disease, a study said. Asthma is a lung condition in which a person’s airways become inflamed, narrow and swell and produce extra mucus. Conversely, boys who were underweight in childhood had a higher risk of asthma admission in early adulthood compared to those with normal BMI, with the strongest link seen with the BMI measurements taken at the age of 12. By understanding which individuals are at risk of developing more severe asthma, we can encourage lifestyle changes that can help reduce this risk,” Ulrik suggested.
