It's impossible to say what share of the small-group market is enrolled in grandmothered plans. Both America's Health Insurance Plans, the industry's leading trade association, and the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association told me they didn't know the extent of grandmothered plans among small businesses. "Many of them said that the grandmothering was a pretty big proportion of their small group book of business," Corlette says. "We had an issuer tell us it was 80 percent of their small group market, but it varies from market to market."
