As the Trump administration said yesterday, the seven countries whose citizens are now banned from entering the U.S. were also named by Barack Obama in an 2015 order to keep foreign terrorist fighters out of the country. However, the Obama administration’s policy was more limited, mandating that travellers who visited those countries obtain a visa before entering the United States. Trump has temporarily banned entry for refugees from around the world and citizens of seven Muslim-majority countries. Trump has said flows of Syrian refugees could be a Trojan Horse allowing ISIL to infiltrate the United States. Terrorist groups have attempted to fill the power vacuum left behind after the Iraq war.
