President Obama attended a remembrance ceremony at the Pentagon to honor the victims that died there on September 11, 2001. Obama spoke at the Pentagon, standing in front of a large American flag draped over the spot where a plane hit the building 15 years earlier. At a time when Donald Trump, the Republican nominee for president, has called for a ban on Muslims entering the United States, Obama outlined a contrasting vision. “Groups like al-Qaeda and ISIL know that they will never be able to defeat a nation as great and as strong as America,” Obama said, using an alternative acronym for the Islamic State militant group. “We will preserve our freedoms, a way of life that makes us a beacon to the world.”
