OFW execution should give death penalty advocates pauseBy The Manila Timeshome/Opinion/Editorial/OFW execution should give death penalty advocates pauseTHE execution this week of an overseas Filipino worker (OFW) in Saudi Arabia is an unfortunate tragedy, and should make those who favor the return of capital punishment here in the Philippines reflect carefully on their advocacy. The news of the execution comes at a time when the prospect of reinstating the death penalty here in the Philippines has again been raised. We do not support calls for the reinstatement of the death penalty. If the Philippines reinstates the death penalty, that argument is no longer available, which in Locsin’s view, means that no argument is available. The unfortunate execution of the OFW in Saudi Arabia, however, should remind everyone concerned that reinstating the death penalty is neither a solution nor a deterrent to heinous crimes, and should be considered with grave care.
