The Orange County Sheriff’s Department must review the evidence in more than 22,000 cases after 15 deputies were criminally investigated for failing to properly book information. Two audits conducted from February 2018 to February 2019 found issues with deputies booking evidence “outside of department policy,” according to the Sheriff’s Department. The department started reviewing evidence in cases in December after the district attorney’s office identified more than 1,200 active criminal cases in need of review. When the agency began that review, it discovered two more deputies suspected of failing to do their jobs. The case review team includes staff from the Sheriff’s Department and district attorney’s office.
