The Conservative Party of Canada is in a rebuilding phase after electing Erin O’Toole as party leader last August. O’Toole won over party members by branding himself as a “true-blue” conservative, an avowed protector of right-wing politics and policies. He wrote a statement in January saying there would be “no place for the far right” in the party and has signalled a shift to the middle of the political spectrum and appealing to the middle class. Those ideas are counter to other conservative parties in western politics, where both the Republican Party in the U.S. and the Conservative Party in the U.K. have leaned into hard-right, populist rhetoric.
