Number of German residents with immigrant roots reaches record high

Photo: DPAThe number of people in Germany who come from immigrant parents or are immigrants themselves has reached a new high of 18.6 million. Slightly more than half (52 percent) of those with immigrant backgrounds have German citizenship. The report further looked at the achievement gap between those with immigrant backgrounds and those without. For example, 9 percent of those with immigrant heritage had no high school or secondary school qualification, compared to 2 percent of the population without immigrant roots. Among those with immigrant backgrounds, people who were not born in Germany disproportionately had no vocational qualification (33 percent).
