Purnesh Modi, the BJP MLA from Surat West seat filed the complaint against Rahul Gandhi on April 16, under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 499 and 500 that deal with defamation. He was referring to an election rally at Kolar in Karnataka on April 13, where Rahul Gandhi had said, "Nirav Modi, Lalit Modi, Narendra Modi...how come they all have Modi as common surname. Purnesh Modi claimed that the Congress president's remark had defamed the entire Modi community. "There are a large number of people with the Modi surname.
