Novavax's COVID-19 vaccine prevents 90% of infections

On Thursday, the Gathersburg, Maryland-based company released results from two clinical trials, one held in the UK and the other in South Africa. Roughly half were infected with the UK variant known as B.1.1.7, and the vaccine appeared to be almost as effective in that group. But in South Africa, the Novavax shot was not as protective and was found to be just 49.4% effective against COVID-19. In a late-stage UK study, the Novovax vaccine was shown to be 89.3% effective at preventing COVID-19 infection, but it was just 49.3% effective against the South Africa variant. The biotechnology company has been running trials in Britain, South Africa, the U.S. and Mexico.
