The Ontario Provincial Police and Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry are reminding northwestern Ontario residents that not all black bear encounters require a call to 911. In a media release issued Thursday, the agencies sid only situations in which bears are posing an immediate threat to public safety should be reported to police. The media release stated that human-bear interactions are related to the availability of natural food sources. When those are unavailable, black bears will search for food, and may be drawn into residential areas by garbage or bird feed.
