Months earlier Blaine had lost her job of 10 years and she seemed trapped in a downward spiral. ADBack in Richmond by 2005, Blaine began working as a research associate at a polymer film company. In 2007 she decamped to a better job in Charlottesville, where Brittney was working as a graphic designer. Gumlock was working two jobs trying to cover the mortgage on the house the couple had bought the previous year. Doctors told her she needed brain surgery and soon; it was the only way to definitively identify the type of brain tumor.
