Not ‘arrival of the apocalypse’ says Kenney of budget as labour anger grows

CALGARY—After hundreds of Alberta public sector supporters protested outside the United Conservatives’ annual general meeting in Calgary over the weekend, Jason Kenney urged calm amid talk of labour union action. Kenney said the NDP should stop “making this out to be the arrival of the apocalypse.”“This is ridiculous,” he said. The protesters were recently told by the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees that the government was moving forward with layoffs that would impact Alberta Health Services employees. But when Kenney was asked about the prospect of a general strike carried out by multiple unions, he asked for public sector leaders to consider the burden on the private sector and taxpayers. “I will say that we encourage government union leaders to choose the path of collaboration and not confrontation,” Kenney said.
