A ban on women at a marae building site could deter young women from working in construction, according to a company which encourages Māori and Pasifika people to learn trades. Denise Piper Mokau Marae near Whangārei has banned women while building work is underway. Supplied Sam Sefuiva, project manager of Māori & Pasifika Trades Training, said a marae building ban on women could discourage them from the trades. Maori & Pasifika Trades Training has a programme encouraging women into trades. Mokau Marae's building work dates back to 2013 when the wharenui and wharepaku (toilet block) were damaged by fire.
