The theft, one of the largest in the short history of digital currencies, involved a hacking attack on an exchange operated by a video game called Axie Infinity. Because transactions in Ethereum were relatively time-consuming, the Vietnamese company behind the game created an in-game currency linked to Ethereum which allowed for quicker and cheaper transactions. But it proved more vulnerable to a cyberattack.
